July 27th anchored off Protection Island at Nanaimo: We like nice quiet
anchorages but given heavy winds we made about a 20 minute commute from
the dock to the bay at Nanaimo today and anchored. You never know
what you are going to find in anchorages that are close to a city. This
one has been fun. We got to watch the search and rescue unit doing
maneuvers which means they were dropping frog people from the helicopter
to a moving motor boat. Then they reversed the maneuver with frog
people climbing back up the rope to the hovering helicopter. We are up
close and personal with a log float and two active tug boats moving
massive amounts of logs from one side of the pond to the other.
Tomorrow is the 47th annual bathtub race http://www.harbourliving.ca/event/2013-nanaimo-marine-festival-and-international-world-bathtub-race/
which means that this evening we had a wonderful seat for a very well
done fireworks show. Quite a different day for us but fun
none-the-less.
